In 2019 Indigo Art worked with SMC Art on the supply of artwork to SAGA’s new cruise ship, The Spirit of Discovery.
Built by Meyer Werft in Germany, the ship was delivered on 24 June 2019 and began operations on 10 July 2019. Upon delivery, she became Saga’s first ever new-build ship.
With a capacity of 999 passengers, Spirit of Discovery houses several specialty restaurants, a theatre, and fitness and wellness facilities.
Indigo Art Ltd organised the collection of original artworks sourced and commissioned by SMC, direct from the artists from around the UK and beyond and brought them back to our framing workshop on the Wirral where they were securely stored. Some of these works were then scanned in-house and re-produced as framed prints for the cabins. All artworks were then individually framed.
Working with the designers we specified the framing method for each piece selecting the frames, mounts, glazing, double checking the sizes and fixing method. Weights had to be carefully considered and logged as per the ships specifications.
When you consider there were thousands of artworks involved it does become a considerable logistical exercise. We welcomed the team from SMC Art to come and visit on a regular basis to check on progress and the quality of products.
Once finished every piece had to be carefully photographed for cataloguing purposes, labelled, wrapped, crated and delivered to the shipyard in Germany at the required times.
SAGA’s second ship The Spirit of Adventure is now nearing completion – a project we manged to fulfil despite COVID – but that’s another story which we will share with you soon !
